Federal government releases list of employment law priorities

Employment laws change frequently and can be difficult to navigate with federal, state and local governments each having different standards. That's why we try to keep you updated with discussions about new regulations on our blog.

Elections, from the municipal level to the federal level, can lead to changes that affect employees and employers. This makes awareness of potential changes that could have immediate or future ramifications very important.

Several federal agencies recently released their semi-annual regulatory agendas. The United States Department of Labor (DOL) is included in this group, and its list includes 38 short-term priorities. Included on the list:

  • Replacing the overtime rule
  • Rescinding tip pool regulations
  • Updating regulations that allow some employers to pay employees with disabilities less than minimum wage

The report offers a glimpse into the federal government's priorities, and can help you prepare for possible changes as an employer or an employee.

This is just a preliminary list, so more needs to be done before any new rules are adopted. However, the DOL regulates things such as wage and hour claims, overtime and occupational safety, so this report offers valuable insight into what the agency may be planning for the coming months and years.

Again, keep in mind that there are also regulations issued by state and local governments that you should be aware of as well.

The full list of priorities released by the DOL can be found here.
